Three Egg Painting Exercise

This is a painting exercise developed to help an artist practice values and lighting. I made a composition by photographing a matte black egg, a matte white egg and a glossy red egg. The different values and surfaces make painting each egg a completely different experience. I chose to put the eggs in a glossy bowl so I could repeat the elliptical shaping of the eggs to create harmony. I painted this using the C.F. Payne method: a fixative sealed line drawing > acrylic base > oil wash > lifted lights with kneaded eraser > layers of acrylic washes and colored pencil
